About this product
Papaver rhoeas (open pollinated) SEED
(a.k.a. Flanders poppy, common poppy, field poppy)
Year grown/saved: 2024
# of seeds: ¼ teaspoon (I've never counted.... but it's hundreds!)
Note: These are seeds for growing flowers - these seeds are not edible.
This is a mix of red, white, orange, pink, mauve and grey poppies. Some have picotee edging, some have lacy veining. Some are pale with darker edges, some are dark with white edges. All together they create a mass of stunning flowers.
Papaver rhoeas grow around 18 inches tall. Because they have long wiry flower stems, it is best to grow them against a wall, or in a large mass, so that the wind doesn’t blow them over.
Each individual flower doesn’t last for more than a few days, but as a large mass, these poppies keep flowering all through August and September, until a hard frost kills them.
You can collect the seed pods for replanting the next year, or just leave the dying plants in place and they will self seed and come back for you every year.
Direct sow while the ground is still frozen. Sprinkling on snow-covered ground works. Poppies need cold stratification to germinate, so the freeze thaw cycle of early spring is necessary. If you are unable to sow seeds before the snow is gone, put your seeds in the freezer.
Please see my other listings - I sell a wide variety of locally adapted vegetable and flower seeds.
