Hida Winter Squash Seeds (Kabocha type)
Year grown/saved: 2024
# of seeds: 6
Hida winter squash is a rare heirloom kabocha from Japan. The variety is actually called “Sukuna” but the name is trademarked, which means that only squash grown in Takayama city, Japan, can legally be called Sukuna. In Japan, it is one of the most expensive kabocha varieties, and you won’t find it in grocery stores, since high-end restaurants buy them up.
This squash is my new favourite squash - it’s the only squash that smells sweet and delicious when I cut it open.
Shaped like a Georgia candy roaster, the fruits are a pale greenish grey and weigh from 5 to 8 pounds. The orange flesh is very very sweet and somewhat dry, similar in texture to a potato. It won’t mush when cooked, so it’s perfect for stir fries, roasting, and stews, where you don’t want it to turn to watery mush. The skin does not require peeling.
The sweet chestnutty flesh is equally good in soups and pies. Possibly the sweetest winter squash you will ever grow!
Please see my other listings - I sell a wide variety of locally adapted vegetable and flower seeds.
