Best beans for hummingbirds and dry beans.

Grows 8 ft tall and keeps going, so make sure you have a sturdy trellis. I let mine grow up the deck railings and up the gazebo. Works as a shade curtain and privacy lattice - if you don’t mind the hummingbirds zipping around. We get endless hummingbirds once the beans start flowering.

For dry beans, leave on the vine until the pods start getting papery. If there is risk of frost, bring in the vines if you can to finish drying inside, or bring in just the pods if the vines seem too messy. Wait until the pods dry out before shelling them. If you shell these beans and they are neon pink, they are not ripe. Wait longer.

As dry beans, these make the best chili, baked beans, and bean salads. The beans are firm and meaty, and extra large - a cooked bean can be half the size of my thumb.

Plant 2 inches deep, 4 inches apart in a row.
