Comfrey contains allantoin, a hormone-like substance that stimulates cell division. Due to pyrrolizidine alkaloids there is concern for hepatic toxicity and should therefore be only applied externally. Produces purple, rose or white bell shaped flowers. Plant in full sun-part shade in average to moist soil. Height 24-42 inches.
